Facebook Email

http://www.cio.com/article/636345/5_Ways_Facebook_Email_Could_Threaten_Gmail?source=rss_news

http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2010/11/15/speculation_mounts_as_facebook_prepares_for_event/?p1=News_links

After hearing the news about Facebook creating their own email, I was left wondering if I would use the service. There are some positive aspects about a possible Facebook email. One major positive would the the ability to have instant message, but gmail already offers the serivce. In addition Gmail has a problem sending pictures through email. I think that I would most likely not use the Facebook email service. I already spend enough time on Facebook as is and would like to not spend any more time on the site. I don't like the message system that Facebook currently uses as well. In addition Facebook updates and makes changes to their user interfaces very often and would not want to adjust every 6 months to a new format.

iPad in Businesses

http://www.cio.com/article/634887/IT_Interest_in_IPad_Surges_Survey_Shows?taxonomyId=3061

As the popularity of the iPad grows, IT departments in many companies have grown more interested in the possibility of having the iPad in their office. Businesses are surprised with the security of the operating system and the ability to run business related apps. The early adopters of the iPad are health care and retail businesses.
I think it is very interesting that business are considering iPad's in the office. This technology will allow workers to become more flexible allowing workers to move about with the ability to be networked with their co-workers. Companies can gain a competitive advantage by using this innovative technology

This hi-lites Apple's recent problems with bringing out new technology. Recentley Apple has unveiled their new MacBook Air, but there are now reported glitches with the screen. Apple could be rushing out products to meet demand however, they are neglecting core problems with their products. They are not doing an adequate job planning their technology. They need to do more testing to ensure that their products run without glitches.

The Fall of MySpace

I remember my junior year in high school in 2004 when everyone had MySpace. All my friends personalized their own pages and friended everyone possible. Then we got older and started to use Facebook. We soon realized that Facebook was a superior website to MySpace for a number of reasons such as a cleaner layout, security features, and the coolness of having a Facebook at that time. Now six years later MySpace is seriously hurting. They have 100 million less visitors than Facebook and that number continues to grow. The company that bought MySpace a couple of years ago is now reconsidering the funding of the troubled site. So how can MySpace regain market share in the social media market.

MySpace is considering a massive redesign of their website. They know that they are have enormous problems with their website layout. Since MySpace was fully customizable a lot of pages were very hard to read. They are considering getting rid of this feature for a cleaner look. Also, there is a large security problem. Many people would get friended by  people they don't know creating a massive security and stalking problem. A major technology redesign is the most risky redesign possible. They are going to completely overhaul their entire website which leads to a larger possibility of failure. A company such as MySpace is redesigning because they are in a serious hole. They have to make critical redesign decision in order to attempt to regain market share in the social networking world.

Iphone to Verizon

With the very real possibility of Verizon getting the iPhone, I was left pondering what would happen to AT&T and Verizon. I think when Verizon gets the iPhone there will be a flood of people leaving AT&T for the iPhone. However, there are some limitations of the iPone on the Verizon network. With the Verizon network you cannot talk on the phone and multitask at the same time. This left me wondering if I would ever really need to do this. I have only done multitasked a few times on my iPhone, but would necessarily need to use this feature on the iPhone. Also, what would happen to the Verizon network if there was such a huge influx on their network? Also, would the iPhone loose its luster if everyone had one?
I think an interesting point that I have read about is what happens to the AT&T network when all these people leave? If people stayed with AT&T, there would be more space available on the network so that would mean fewer dropped calls. So should I stay with AT&T because of this new network availability? I am leaning towards staying with AT&T because of this network availability and multitasking.
I think another interesting point is why didn't AT&T invest in their network? They should have know that Apple was eventually going to offer the iPhone to Verizon. AT&T should have invested in their network so there was more coverage in areas and no dropped calls. If they fixed these problems then they wouldn't have the mass exodus that will happen when Verizon gets the iPhone. I don't think they invested because they thought people were going to get the iPhone regardless of the network because people wanted the Apple image.

Microsoft SharePoint

http://www.cio.com/article/619764/Microsoft_SharePoint_Three_Deployment_Challenges

Microsoft SharePoint is a system designed to enable workers in the company. 56% of its users use SharePoint to support decision making. The program also acts as a repository for the company. This program is very similar to ShareNet which Siemens once offered to consumers. A program like this enables workers to share knowledge, while everything put on the website remains on the page. The hardest part of a KMS is enticing workers to share their knowledge.

ShareNet collapsed because Siemens could not get workers to share their knowledge. Workers did not see any reason to upload what they know, without any immediate return. Another aspect of SharePoint is the user interface, which has complicated using the program. SharePoint should create an interface that creates more personal interaction, such as skype or an interface like Facebook or Twitter. Users of the program specifically said that the interfaces of Facebook and Twitter are easier to use and now expect more from social media sites

Blockbuster Video

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/24/business/24blockbuster.html?src=busln

In the world of video rental Blockbuster had finally fallen by filling for chapter 11 bankruptcy. I remember 7 years ago driving around my hometown in Massachusetts, seeing 5 Blockbusters in a 10 mile radius, now there is only 1 and it's struggling. There are barely any movies in the store now and you can tell the employees know their company is struggling. The fall of Blockbuster is a classic example of a company not doing a good job with the company strategy. They neglected to take the treat of netflix and redbox seriously. They were the clear industry heavyweight years ago, but they let their ego get to them.

Blockbuster could have easily implemented an online version of their company much sooner. They had resources to do the project but simply didn't. This case is the clear opposite of ZARA. ZARA is an industry leader in its retail segment and chose not implement new technology. Their gamble paid off and they remained the leader. However, now ZARA is starting to incorporate internet sales in its biggest markets, going against their original business philosophy.

Blockbuster should have seen what was coming in their industry. 10 years ago they had all the capital to institute and implement an online store like netflix, but they were resistant technology, and how technology could alter their industry
